Is there a free Minecraft download?

With the Internet being what it is, “unofficial” versions of any game pop up mere hours after a release (sometimes even before then). The more popular a game is, the more unofficial versions there are, and Minecraft is no different.

Even in its beta phase, various sites have promoted and advertised free to play versions of Minecraft and host their own Minecraft servers. While these sites aren’t hard to find by any stretch (just google “free minecraft” and you’ll get a boatload of results), I’m hard pressed to recommend any of them. (more…)

What are Minecraft skins and texture packs?

Let’s face it—as iconic as Minecraft’s pixelicious graphics are, there are times when you’re sick of seeing the same blocky textures over and over. You’ve invested your hard-earned money into a powerful graphics card, and all it’s doing is rendering textures that wouldn’t even strain your battered old 486.

The answer? Skins and texture packs!

Skins, as we covered in yesterday’s post, customize the look of your player avatar into something (hopefully) more appealing and unique. You can either create your own skin or download something others have already done.

Texture packs are similar to skins in that they change the appearance of potentially every other object/model in the game. These are different from mods, which change how the game behaves. Texture packs are purely cosmetic in nature.

All About Minecraft Skins

What are skins?

“Skins” in Minecraft refers to textures that are placed onto either player models or mob models. These textures show up in the game as the model’s skin, and can be modified or customised to suit any player’s fancy. Think of them as custom player avatars.

If you’re going to be playing multiplayer Minecraft, you’re going to want to have a custom skin of your own to differentiate you from other players. Or, you may want to have a skin of your own just for the hell of it.

I’m cool with both.

Just keep in mind, though, that you can only change skins if you’ve purchased the full version of Minecraft. (more…)

Does the Minecraft iPhone App Suck?

There have been quite a few “pocket editions” or “miniaturized” games that were just offshoot products of a bigger game. Feedback on these games tends to range from mixed to wholly negative (Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for the GBA springs to mind).

I have to admit that the deck is stacked against these pocket editions. Handheld platforms don’t have the processing power that full-sized desktops or consoles do. This limits nearly every aspect of the pocket edition: graphics, speed, content—even gameplay. (more…)

5 Major Differences between Minecraft and Minecraft Pocket Edition

With a name like “Minecraft Pocket Edition”, it’s probably safe to assume that some features would be left out when Mojang ported the game from the PC to mobile devices. This in itself is only natural—even powerful mobile platforms like the iPad only have a limited amount of resources compared to a full PC setup (or even a laptop).

Even though they both share the same name and the same concept, these are two vastly different games, and have to be regarded as such. What makes Pocket Edition so different from its older brother? (more…)
